Names hold powerful traces of history. Archivists have reviewed every document in the Archive and recorded hundreds of individual names – each name linking us to a lived experience. To make these name-connections easier to explore, we have separated the names into two sections listing first names and last names. The first section highlights given names, allowing learners to search for individuals who may appear across multiple records. The second section focuses on family names, which can reveal connections among families and communities. While some family names belong to enslaved individuals and some family names belong to those who enslaved them, viewing the family names together invites reflection on how identity, memory and recordkeeping intertwine in the history of slavery and its legacy.
